Power Outage: Is the Problem in Your House or the Grid?

Safe observations that help distinguish a neighbourhood outage from an electrical fault inside your property.

When the power goes out, the first question is whether the supply has failed more widely or protection inside the property has disconnected a circuit. A few safe observations can help direct the next call.

Check the situation without opening equipment

Look for street lighting and whether nearby properties have power. Inside, observe the consumer unit without touching damaged parts. A single affected circuit suggests a different problem from a complete local outage.

Signs worth paying attention to

  • Neighbours have power but your entire property does not
  • One breaker or RCD has moved to the off position
  • The outage followed a smell, noise, leak or appliance failure

If the grid appears healthy and the installation will not remain energised, an electrician can test the incoming arrangement and internal circuits. For a safe assessment, see our emergency electrical service.

What to check before booking

  • Ask a neighbour whether their supply is affected
  • Note whether all or only some circuits are off
  • Keep refrigerators closed while arranging help

Contact the electricity network operator for a confirmed area outage. Related work may also involve our electrical fault-finding.

When to call an electrician

Stop using the affected circuit if there is heat, smoke, visible damage, repeated tripping or a burning smell. Do not remove covers or touch exposed wiring; arrange an inspection by a suitably qualified electrician.

If you are in Paphos and need a clear assessment, call or message Paphos Electricians. Describe the issue, your location and whether the fault is urgent so the right visit can be arranged.
