Why Has One Socket Stopped Working?
Common explanations for a dead socket and why the visible outlet may not be the source of the fault.
A socket that stops working can be caused by the accessory itself, a loose connection, an upstream fault, a protective device or damage elsewhere on the circuit.
The failed point may be upstream
Electrical circuits often supply several outlets. Testing confirms whether the problem is isolated to one socket or affects part of the circuit, and whether heat or deterioration is present.
Signs worth paying attention to
- Nearby sockets are also dead
- The outlet worked intermittently before failing
- There is heat, discolouration or a loose faceplate
Replacing the visible socket without testing can miss the actual cause. For a safe assessment, see our electrical repair service.
What to check before booking
- Test the appliance at a known working outlet
- Note which other outlets are affected
- Stop use immediately if there are heat marks
Avoid extension-lead arrangements that overload another outlet while waiting for repair. Related work may also involve our fault-finding service.
When to call an electrician
Stop using the affected circuit if there is heat, smoke, visible damage, repeated tripping or a burning smell. Do not remove covers or touch exposed wiring; arrange an inspection by a suitably qualified electrician.
If you are in Paphos and need a clear assessment, call or message Paphos Electricians. Describe the issue, your location and whether the fault is urgent so the right visit can be arranged.
